| Abandoned | An event that is not completed. |
| Accumulator | A multiple, cumulative bet where the punter designates a selection in several races or events. The winnings from the first selection go onto the next selection and so on. All the selections must win for the accumulator to win and to collect. A 2-selection accumulator is known as a double, 3-selection accumulator is known as a treble, 4-selections is a fourfold, 5 a fivefold or five-timer and so on. |
| Action | 1. A bet of any kind. 2. A bet of any kind is deemed "action" if valid. Different rules apply in different sports to determine if a bet is "action" or not. |
| Agent | A person who solicits bets for a bookmaker and gets a commission. |
| All In | A bet that stands regardless of whether your selection plays or not. |
| All To Come (ATC) | When you put an ATC bet on, you are betting on a number of selections, and all of them must win for the bet to be successful. Once the first win has occurred, the winnings and original stake are wagered on the next bet, and so on until all bets have been completed. So if the first bet on a 10 stake won at 5-1, the amount rolled forward onto the next bet would be 60, and so on. |
| Ante Post | An "ante-post" bet is a long term advance bet on a future event, perhaps even before all the details of the event is known (e.g. the list of runners declaring for a horse race). |
| Apprentice | A young jockey who is tied to a trainer while gaining race-riding experience. When racing against professional jockeys, apprentices receive weight concessions to compensate for their relative inexperience. |
| Arbitrage | When a difference in the odds available allows a punter to back both sides and guarantee a win. |
| Asian Handicap | A type of betting that is used to balance two sides and remove the draw from the game.It is a form of betting normally used with football which is very popular in Asia hence the name. "Handicap" means that a team receives a virtual head start, effectively leading the match by differing amount or amounts before it actually kicks off. |
